Balayage and highlights are a gorgeous way to brighten your look, add dimension, and feel like you just stepped out of the salon. But to keep that fresh, radiant color lasting longer, proper care is essential. Here are my top tips for maintaining your balayage or highlights — para que tu cabello siempre luzca espectacular.

To keep your balayage looking as fresh and radiant as the day you left the salon, here are my top tips every client should follow.
1. Use Sulfate-Free Shampoo & Conditioner
Harsh sulfates can strip away your color and make it fade quickly. Opt for sulfate-free products to keep your balayage looking vibrant. This simple switch helps your color last and gives you that “just out of the salon” glow.
2. Hydrate Weekly with a Deep Hair Mask
Color-treated hair needs moisture. Treat yourself to a nourishing mask once a week to keep your strands soft, shiny, and healthy. Un cabello hidratado es un cabello feliz.
"Stylists at Josh Wood Colour recommend using sulfate-free shampoo and avoiding over-washing to help balayage colors stay vibrant. Similarly, experts at Prelude Salon say softening root lines and carefully caring for the hair between visits can extend how long your color looks fresh.
3. Protect Your Hair from Heat
Before blow-drying, curling, or straightening, always use a heat protectant. My personal favorite is from Amino Truss. And remember — never set your straightener at 450°F! High heat damages your hair and shortens the life of your color.
4. Don’t Wash Your Hair Every Day
Washing daily can dry out your hair and fade your color. Instead, try every other day (un día sí, un día no). On no-wash days, use a good dry shampoo to refresh your style without stripping your balayage.
5. Protect Your Hair from the Sun, Beach & Pool
Okay, we live in Florida — so I can’t tell you to avoid the sun or the beach 🌞🏖. But I can remind you to protect your hair! Use a UV protector spray for your hair to shield it from sun damage and chlorine. Your balayage will thank you.
6. Don’t Forget Toner & Gloss Appointments
To keep your highlights or balayage looking fresh, schedule a gloss, toner, or matte service every 6–8 weeks. It’s the secret to keeping your color bright, beautiful, and natural-looking.
